Remember The Titans is a true story Based on actual events that took place in 1971, a white southern high school is integrated with a nearby school. Two schools in Virginia integrate forming T.C Williams High School. The schools before getting integrated were split because of colour, one school was where all the African Americans go and the other school was where all the British Americans go. The city of Virginia cherished one thing above all and that was Football, when the schools were forced to integrate so were their football teams. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team especially when you can only one coach, the head coach of the Titans( Bill Yoast) is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina(Boone). This makes the white football players uneasy. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where they learn to accept and respect each other no matter the background or personality. After some games the team loses a couple of matches when they got back the players found the city in turmoil due to the forced desegregation of the high school. As the season progresses the team's success caused the community to accept the changes. After the Titans' perfect season, the team and the city were closer than ever.
Techniques Low Angle shot: This shot effectively shows Boone as a leader. The shot makes him appear more important when compared with the other coaches, the shot makes Boone appear intimidating and more dominant and it also drags the focus of the viewer upon Coach Boone. Techniques: The Motown music: “Aint no Mountain High Enough” and the songs by the Temptations, was used as a backdrop to scenes where the Titans were all getting along well. Fore example, in the lunchroom and the locker rooms at the camp. The effect on the film was that it gave the film a relaxed atmosphere. This was to portray that the team members were relaxed in each others company. That they had successfully set-aside their racial and cultural prejudices and been able to build friendships and develop respect for the other cultures in their team(Music is on the right). This was a Diagetic technique. Quotes: Coach Boone: "This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. This green field right here, painted red, bubblin' with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other of not, but you will respect each other. And maybe... I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men." In this Quote Boone stated that the war between African Americans and White American had been around for a very long time but he stated that if they want to win and be successful, they had to deny that heritage and accept and respect each other. Coach Boone: You take a look at her. Cause once you step on that bus you ain't got your mama no more. You got your brothers on the team and you got your daddy. You know who your daddy is, doncha? Gary, if you want to play on this football team, you answer me when I ask you who is your daddy? Who's your daddy, Gary? Who's your daddy? This Quote stated by Boone says that when you join the team there are no barriers unlike the outside world we respect each other, we accept each other no matter what differences we may have me must join hands to accomplish great stuff to put a mark on history itself. The team is your Family from now onward. Analytical Paragraph: The Award wining movie Remember The Titans links to the concept of belonging throughout the entire movie, at the start both races did not accept each other and denied the fact that they need each other to win but as time passed slowly but surely they started to accept each other and give each other the respect they needed. it is showcased by various techniques such as camera shots, sound effects, costume design and setting adaptations. An example of this is shown when they used 60’s Pop Music, this music formed the backdrop to scenes where the Titans were succeeding on the football field and with being accepted into the community as a result of the success of their football season and a another example would be low angle shots to show dominance and power. The movie give simplicity to belonging is easy to do but portrays it in a aggressive manner which gets people's attention and also they use shoulder shot to give a certain perspective on someone's views and also show and expands on the environment. The costume design in Remember The Titan was thought out very carefully they used costumes that were suited to the stereotype at that specific time. The clothes were contextualized for the time period that the actual story happened. |

The characters in the film help portray the message which is being presented by the producer, which is "Racism & Black vs White". Coach Boone, who is one of the main characters in the film, illustrates the image of an outsider coming into a foreign white team to coach. He is known as the character who has found his place coaching a team of mislead boys, and has managed to establish himself as a role in the development of the team, and of the people around him. Coach Boone took the team of both Black and Whites for an early morning jog to Gettysburg where he stood among the graves of many who fought the same battle thats still going on till this day with the racial abuse in society, Coach Boone lead the team in a determined strike to stop racial abuse for good. Throughout the drive and determination Coach Boone pursued his mission and lead the team of white and blacks to victory, The team demonstrated to the community that skin is just a colour and that its personality that really matters, thus creating a society of almost no racial hatred. Racism Quotes “Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just plain wrong.” ― Muhammad Ali “The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's misery.” ― Frederick Douglass |
In the 1900s the white people invaded Africa and thought they were inferior because they looked like monkeys. In the 1400s a few thousand of white people went to Africa to mine minerals. The white people then took advantage of the black people and used them as slaves and considering them as non-humans. The white people took them to America and made them produce more people so the white people could use them as slaves. Africa then lost their control over their country and then the white people were classified racists. This links to the film Remember The Titans because in the movie it shows the two opposing teams conflicting and hateful of each other.
